1. Origin and mineral composition

Ruby and sapphire belong to the same mineral family — both are varieties of corundum (Al₂O₃). Their colour differences come from trace elements: chromium gives ruby its red hue, while iron and titanium give sapphire its blue.

Emerald, by contrast, is a variety of beryl (Be₃Al₂(SiO₃)₆) coloured by chromium or vanadium. It's chemically distinct, more fragile, but incredibly valuable when it comes to colour intensity and natural inclusion patterns.

2. Hardness and durability for daily wear

Sapphires and rubies are excellent for everyday jewellery, including engagement rings. Emeralds, while stunning, are more brittle and need protective settings to reduce the risk of chipping.

“People fall in love with emeralds, but they often don’t realise they’re not ideal for active hands. They're beautiful, but delicate,” says Marcin Pala of Inkluz.

3. Colour and visual appeal

• Ruby: vivid red to purplish-red. The most prized shade is “pigeon blood” – a deep, saturated crimson.

• Sapphire: ranges from soft blue to intense royal blue. Top grades include cornflower blue and velvety royal blue.

• Emerald: pure green to slightly bluish-green. Best stones have evenly distributed colour with no grey or yellow undertones.

4. Inclusions – flaw or signature?

• Rubies often contain rutile “silk,” which may produce a star effect (asterism) in cabochon cuts.

• Sapphires may be cleaner, but still show characteristic inclusions that diffuse light in a pleasing way.

• Emeralds almost always contain inclusions, often described as a jardin (“garden”) – unique, natural fingerprints.

Treatments like heat (rubies, sapphires) or oiling (emeralds) are common and acceptable — but must be clearly disclosed in a certificate from a trusted gem lab. Only emerald inclusions significantly affect durability.

5. Market value

All three stones can command very high prices, especially when over 2 carats, with excellent colour, clarity, and prestigious origin.

• Ruby: Most valuable if from Mogok, Myanmar. Fine Burmese rubies can surpass diamonds in price.

• Sapphire: Highest prices for stones from Kashmir, followed by Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

• Emerald: Best specimens come from Colombia (Muzo, Chivor) and Zambia (Kagem) – origin can greatly increase value.

“People today care more about a gem’s story. A certificate isn’t enough — they want origin, ethics, history. Some choose a Muzo emerald just for the soul of the mine,” adds Marcin Pala.

6. Symbolism and meaning

• Ruby – fire, passion, strength. Perfect for bold personalities or significant anniversaries.

• Sapphire – loyalty, honesty, wisdom. A timeless choice for engagement rings (like Princess Kate’s).

• Emerald – renewal, harmony, nature. Often chosen by creatives, healers, and those who value uniqueness.

7. Which should you choose?

• For engagement rings: Sapphire (durability and meaning) or Ruby (bold statement).

• For cocktail or occasion rings: Emerald or Ruby.

• For investment-grade gifts: Any of the three, if certified (GIA, SSEF, GRS), ideally with origin specified.
